SOME STARTING IDEAS

Page size: To be decided—starter recommendations: Royal (234x156mm) or Demy (216x138mm)

Page count: Depends on page size and design choices

Interior: B&W

Paper: White 74gsm (50lb)

Cover: Gloss or Matte lamination 118gsm (80lb)

A duplex cover option is available: it is possible to print on the inside front and rear covers—this adds £0.30 to the production price of each copy. This might be useful for review quotes, etc. Pricing would need to adapt if this option was required.

Retail pricing: To be decided (depends on page length also) – probably a minimum of £10.99

Staged Payments

To get the project moving a payment of ⅔ of the publishing fee is made on commencement. The ⅓ balance is paid when the full design of the book is locked down (7) in the Design breakdown above.

Publishing Agreement

Whereas traditional publishing agreements tend to focus on a royalty arrangement (typically 10% of list price is paid to the author for retail sales) our approach at Book Brand Business is to make sure the author is receiving the lion’s share of income.

So the author receives 80% of all income received from the various retail channels.

Author Copyright

Retained

The author retains copyright of the work.

Publication Rights

Exclusive English Language

Because of the nature of the arrangements with our print, ebook and audiobook distributors, mPowr has exclusive rights to publish in these formats in English (the stores do not want competing versions of the same title as it causes confusion for consumers). If you want to publish sub-sections of the text in other formats or within other publications just run it past us—as long as it doesn't directly compete with the existing edition there should be no problem using it as you wish.

Author Income

80% income received

All income received by mPowr from sales made via print, audio or ebook retailers will be split (80% to author, 20% to mPowr). Traditional print publishing tends to operate on a 10% of list price royalty rate, similar royalty rates often apply for audiobook and ebook royalties.

Distribution

Global

Published formats will be made available through the book trade's digital distribution network—retailers order via this system (at their discretion).

Author Payout

£150 threshold

You will receive your income (via Bank Transfer) when your balance exceeds £150

Sales Data

Updated 6-Monthly (optional monthly)

Every six months (monthly optional) the sales and income figures for each format are updated on your author dashboard page. Typically there is a 3-month payment lag because of the nature of the distribution channels (so Jan sales income is available early May).

Agreement Duration

5 Years

The agreement is in place until the fifth anniversary of print publication.

Agreement Renewal

5 Years

The agreement renews automatically for further five-year periods unless one party advises the other in writing at least 6 months before the relevant anniversary date.

Return of Physical Copies

Optional

The book trade, until recently, insisted on a returns policy (meaning that shops could order hundreds of copies of a book and then, months or even years later, return them for a refund of what they paid—leading to the books being pulped). We do not usually allow returns on sold copies (for both economic and ecological reasons). Speak to us if you do want returns made available.

Updates or New Editions

Optional

It is possible to update a book to a new edition or to make minor changes once the title is published. A fee would apply depending on the complexity and number of amendments made.

Setting the Retail Prices

Ensuring 20% income to author

Pricing for the title in the various formats will be decided by the author—with the proviso that the minimum permitted price will provide the author with an income through retail channels of at least 20% of the list price. So for a £10.99 book the author's income would need to be at least £2.20. Production costs and trade discounts will determine the minimum viable pricing. We will make recommendations on suitable pricing.

Ongoing Admin Fee

None when 100 or more copies are sold

No administrative fee applies to the calendar year of publication (so 2023 for a title published in Sept 2023).
When sales via retail or direct to author (across all formats) reach 100 or more copies in a single calendar year NO admin fee applies.
If fewer than 100 copies are sold in a calendar year, either via retail channels or direct to author, a £75 admin fee will be charged.

Pricing Reviews

As circumstances change

All pricing for retail and author copies as well as admin fees will be kept under review to adapt to increases in print, distribution costs and general inflation.

Custom Editions

Pricing TBC

Custom editions of the book can be created. These can include adapted front and rear covers tailored with messages for specific conferences, events, etc. These are only available via the author and won't be available through the book trade's distribution system (unless you want to create a dedicated hardback edition down the line for this purpose).

Author Copies

Once the book is published you can order further copies of the physical edition, an order is to a single delivery address.

There is a baseline per-unit copy (current pricing) which is the production cost plus 25%.

Discounts are available on large order quantities.

If you wish to send a batch of copies to a single international address this can also be done (pricing on application).

We will pass on the exact shipping and handling fees from the printer.

Author Copies

Varies on quantity

In addition to your initial author copies (if included in your package) you can order copies at your own author price. This varies depending on the quantity ordered and how soon you want them (always to a single address). Shipping and handling costs will be added to each order.

Price Per Copy

£TBC based on final format and page numbers

In addition to your initial author copies you can order copies at your own author price. This varies depending on the quantity ordered (always to a single address).

1-99 copies

£20 admin fee

The standard price per copy applies plus an admin fee to cover a small order.
